WIFI Connectivity Issues

Home WiFi Problems in Magnolia and The Woodlands

WiFi repair in Magnolia TX and across Montgomery County.
WiFi that works fine in the living room and dies in the back
bedroom. Video calls that freeze every few minutes. A laptop
that’s slow on wireless but fast the moment you plug in a
cable. Devices that drop overnight and won’t reconnect until
you reboot the router.

Try these four things first

Some WiFi problems fix themselves in ten minutes. Start here before you call
anyone, including us.

  • Reboot the router properly. Unplug it, wait thirty
seconds, plug it back in. Wait two full minutes for it to come back. This
resolves a surprising share of intermittent problems.
  • Get the router out of the cabinet. WiFi is close to line
of sight. A router inside a media cabinet, behind a TV, or on the floor is
fighting the house. Up high, out in the open, as central as the cable run
    allows.
  • Check which band you’re on. Most routers broadcast 2.4
GHz and 5 GHz. 5 GHz is faster but travels a shorter distance and handles
walls poorly. If you’re far from the router, 2.4 GHz may actually be better.
Near it, switch to 5 GHz.
  • Count your devices. Phones, tablets, TVs, thermostats,
doorbells, printers, game consoles. An older router can run out of capacity
    well before you’d expect.

When it’s time to call someone

If you’ve done all four and the problem is still there, you’re past what you
can fix from the couch. What’s left is usually:

  • Dead zones caused by construction. Brick, tile, plaster,
foil-backed insulation, and metal ductwork all block signal. Many homes in
this area have at least one of these. No amount of router repositioning fixes
    a wall.
  • Interference. Microwaves, cordless phones, baby monitors,
and your neighbor’s router all compete on 2.4 GHz. In a dense neighborhood
this can be significant, and finding it takes a meter.
  • A router that’s simply old. If yours came from your
internet provider more than five years ago, it predates most of the devices
    now connected to it.
  • A house too large for one router. Past roughly 2,500
square feet, a single access point usually isn’t enough regardless of where
    you put it.

What we do about it

We come to the house. There’s no way to diagnose a coverage problem
remotely — we need to walk the rooms where it fails and measure what’s actually
reaching them.

  • Site survey. We map signal strength room by room and
identify exactly where and why it drops.
  • Mesh systems. For most homes with dead zones, a mesh
setup is the right answer — multiple units covering the house as one network,
so your phone doesn’t cling to a weak signal as you walk.
  • Wired access points. Where it’s practical, running
ethernet to a second access point beats any wireless extender. More work
    upfront, far better result.
  • Router replacement. If the hardware is the bottleneck,
we’ll tell you what to buy and set it up properly. We’re not tied to any
    brand.
  • Printer and device reconnection. The thing that always
gets forgotten after a network change.

How pricing works

You get a quote before we start, not an hourly rate that
runs until we’re done. If anything changes that number, we
call you first. The assessment fee comes off your final bill
if you go ahead with the work.

Mesh installation typically runs [$XXX–$XXX] plus hardware, depending on the
size of the house and how many units it needs. We’ll give you the number before
we start, and if it changes, we call you first.

A note on extenders

Plug-in WiFi extenders are cheap and they’re the first thing most people try.
They work in a narrow set of situations — one dead spot, close enough to the
router to still get a strong signal. Outside that, they often make things worse,
because they typically halve throughput and create a second network your devices
hop between badly.

If you’ve already bought one and it didn’t help, that’s not your fault. It’s
the wrong tool for most houses.
